How Not to F*ck Up Your Summer

Summer is the easiest season to waste.

Not because anything goes wrong. Because nothing does.

The pace eases, the calendar opens, and three months later you wonder where it went.

Here’s how not to lose it.

> You won’t get this summer back. Get the most of it.

Five Ways to Get It Right

1. Go where you can’t be reached.

At least one trip this summer should put you somewhere unfamiliar enough that your routine can’t follow you.

Different language, different rhythm, no signal if you can manage it.

Disconnecting from your life is how you reconnect with yourself.

The version of you that gets buried in the routine has a hard time showing up unless the routine stops.

That’s the trip that could give you insights for the next ten years.

2. Who are you missing?

Someone came to mind just now.
That’s the one.

Summer opens calendars in a way the rest of the year doesn’t.

Use it on the people who knew you before the title: the friend you’ve drifted from, the mentor you haven’t called, the family member you keep meaning to see.

Make the visit.
Pick up the phone.
Get in front of them.

3. Make something this summer.

The project you’ve been thinking about for two years.

The thing you used to do before work took the bandwidth.

The book, the painting, the business, the song.

Give it three real hours a week.
It doesn’t have to go anywhere.

Creativity is how the part of you that isn’t your job stays alive.

4. Rest like you mean it.

Most summer “rest” isn’t.

It’s a vacation that needs its own vacation.

A weekend with the email open.

Sleep interrupted by next Monday.

Real rest takes three things: enough time that your nervous system actually downshifts, enough disconnection that work can’t reach you, and enough space that you’re not filling every hour with activity.

You can’t rush into rest.
You have to settle into it.

5. Look at where the year is going.

You’re halfway through.

The goals you set in January — are they still the right ones?

The version of your life you imagined this year would deliver — are you moving toward it, or have you quietly settled for something else?

An hour with a notebook.
A long walk with the questions.

A conversation with someone who’ll tell you the truth.

July is when the second half is decided.

> The summer you remember is the one you chose.

YOUR MISSION, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT

Pick one of the five.

Do it this week.
